Since virtualisation of servers is starting to be common, I thought I would write a couple of lines about how this impact your needs for Operations Manager license.

When you want to monitor servers that is running on a virtual server (doesn’t need to be a Microsoft Virtualisation technology), you only need to pay for one OML (the physical server), although it has to be the enterprise version of the OML.

This is actually not new, the same works for MOM 2005 but a lot of people doesn’t know about it!

Read more about this on Licensing Microsoft Server Products with Virtual Machine Technologies. This document is not updated for Operations Manager 2007, but I have confirmed that the same as for MOM 2005!
