Issues when using the "Import Updates from Partner Catalogs" in SCE May 15, 2007

In System Center Essentials (SCE), you have the option to import updates from partners by using the “Import Updates from partner catalogs”.

The two problems I have found is:

  1. Even if the wizard state that the import was successfully, the actual update files are not downloaded. In my tests I have tried to download updates from both of the partners that are provided in the wizard (Citrix System Inc. – Citrix Hotfix Catalog, 1E – 1E Updates Catalog). I have also tested to add Adobe and I get the same results.
    To verify this issue, open file explorer after the Wizard is done and brows to the “UpdateServicesPackages” directory. Here you will see a directory with the same name as the update and inside you will see a empty cab file!

    Example with a Citrix update:
    c:\UpdateServicesPackages\Presentation Server 4_0 Hotfix Rollup 3 for Windows 2003_d966ef96-4f41-498e-8f14-aabd2ef38a84
    Inside this directory you will find a empty directory and a empty cab file

  2. One of the partners that have a “catalog file”, but not included in the “Import Updates from partner catalogs” is HP. Unfortunately HP host the “catalog files”  at a FTP site which SCE doesn’t support  (SCE only support http and https at the moment but this will hopefully be fixed in future versions). To “override” this, you can download the file and host it on your own web server, but then you will find the other problem – during the import of the updates the SCE Console will crash. The reason for the crash is the cab file itself that includes some errors.

Both of these issues have been reported to Microsoft and they are working on updates to fix it!

 

The server I used to test this has the following configuration:

  • Windows 2003 SP2 Eng (x86)
  • SQL Express
  • All SCE components on the same box
  • Swedish Regional Settings

Please use the latest catalog. SCE crashing during the import of the HP catalog should be fixed now. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software/sms_catalog/HpCatalogForSms.latest.cab

I got the same problem with the Citrix & Adobe Catalogs. .cab is there but no update file… 😦
