Today Microsoft announced that there will be a new product in the System Center family – System Center Mobile Device Manager 2008. The product will cover three areas:

Security Management

  • Active Directory Domain joined (your Windows Mobile will be added as objects in Active Directory)
  • Policy Enforcement using Active Directory Group Policy (there will be about 130 policies that you can enable just as you do for a Windows desktop).

Device Management

  • Software Deployment (It will use WSUS 3.0 SP1 as it’s mechanism to deploy software and updates to the devices)
  • Inventory
  • Reporting

Mobile Optimized VPN

  • Machine authentication
  • Session Persistence
  • Fast reconnect
  • Internet roaming
  • Using standard protocols based IKEv2, MobIKE, IPSEC tunnel mode)

All this looks extremely good, but to be able to manage your device you need an updated version of Windows Mobile that will be released some time in Q1 next year. If your hardware vendor will provide this update for free is still not announced. Another question I haven’t found the answer to is if this will be included in the upcoming SP/version of System Center Configuration Manager.

Note that the tool will only inform you, not do any changed for you.

Microsoft has now released the long awaited management pack for Exchange 2007. Now, this is good news, but the bad part of this story is that the MP is still a converted MP. With that sad, it is important that you import the new and updated version of the Backward Compatibility Version 6.0.5000.16 (download below) before importing the Exchange MP.

How do you document your Active Directory and Exchange environment October 2, 2007

Have you ever wanted to document your Active Directory and Exchange Environment? A couple of years ago, you could use Visio 2000 to do just this. The problem is that Microsoft removed that function from newer versions of Visio. Today I found a new cool application from Microsoft (and it’s free) that fixes this problem. You install the application and select what you want to document (see print screens below). When you have done your selections, just click “Draw” and it will create Visio document.

Download The Microsoft Active Directory Topology Diagrammer from Microsoft

Brief Description

The Microsoft Active Directory Topology Diagrammer reads an Active Directory configuration using ActiveX Data Objects (ADO), and then automatically generates a Visio diagram of your Active Directory and /or your Exchange 200x Server topology. The diagrams include domains, sites, servers, administrative groups, routing groups and connectors and can be changed manually in Visio if needed.

Are you evaluating Windows Server 2008? Then you probably seen the new function “Granular Password policy”. The bad part of this function is the lack of a “GUI” to create the policy. The good thing is that you can now download a free tool from one of our partner Special Operations Software to create them (and if you don’t like to use a GUI tool, you can use the PowerShell cmdlets).
